42 KM – KRAS KROS TRAIL RUN

42 km – 1,800 m Elevation Gain – Suitable for More Experienced Trail Runners

The 42 km course starts at the Monument of Peace in Cerje and first climbs over 10 Karst hills all the way to Trstelj.

The section to Trstelj is somewhat more technically demanding, as it mostly follows narrow single-track trails. The course then continues along varied single-track terrain, followed by a fast and technically demanding descent towards the road crossing. From there, the route continues towards St. Catherine (Sv. Katarina) and then over Mali Ovčjak and Veliki Ovčjak, all the way to the area known as the Iron Gates (Železna vrata).

At the Iron Gates, one of the more challenging and potentially dangerous descents of the course begins. The route follows an old cavalry trail towards Renče. This descent is technically demanding mainly because of the terrain, with plenty of loose and rolling rocks, so extra caution is required.

Once you reach the valley, the route turns uphill again. Several short but fairly steep climbs follow, where caution is also required due to the rocky and uneven terrain. There are also some sections along gravel roads.

A short section of the route also follows an asphalt road for connection purposes, where extra caution and awareness of traffic will be required.

The course then continues towards Miren, where you climb up to Miren Castle, followed by another climb back towards Cerje. From Miren, there is one more short but steeper climb.

At the top, you continue along a gravel road, followed by several shorter single-track sections passing the interesting Pečnike Cave. The route then follows picturesque Karst trails before gradually returning to the finish at the Monument of Peace in Cerje.

The course is primarily intended for more experienced trail runners who are accustomed to longer distances, varied terrain and technically demanding sections. Although the course is not extremely technical, the characteristics of the Karst terrain require extra caution on certain sections, particularly because of rocks, loose stones, uneven ground, steep climbs and descents, and narrow single-track trails.

Trail running poles are recommended. Dangerous sections will be clearly marked with warning signs and exclamation marks.

There will be four main aid stations along the course, approximately every 10 km:

Trstelj
Oševljek near Renče
before Miren
lower parking area below Cerje, near the main road
additional intermediate points with drinking water may also be available

At the aid stations, you will be able to replenish fluids and energy and prepare for the next section of the course.

Your effort will be rewarded with exceptional views of the surrounding landscape and a unique experience of the Karst countryside.

The varied, challenging and exceptionally scenic 42 km course is a great opportunity to test your limits at the Kras Kros Trail Run and experience some of the most authentic and beautiful corners of the Karst landscape
